Here is some motivation for your workouts for this week!
This will be a slow week for me on the blog this week, as we are heading to Walt Disney World in a few days! Man it has been a long time, 4 months is a long time between Disney visits, right?
This is my last week before we get to head back to our second home next week, Walt Disney World. So I have to hammer out some good runs this week so I can take it somewhat easy next week.
Monday (4/22): I did a 1.25 mile walk at lunch with coworkers Michael and Erica. Later that evening we went over to the TrySports Mt Pleasant 2.62 mile charity run/walk for Boston.
Tuesday (4/23): 4 mile downtown Charleston run
Wednesday (4/24): 3 mile walk at lunch with coworkers Michael and Melvin
Thursday (4/25): No Workout
Friday (4/26): No Workout
Saturday (4/27): 5 mile run in downtown Charleston with Joanna Gell and Dan Williams. After I got home I did a 2.25 mile walk with my dogs before the rains came.
Yearly Running Goal: 1000 Miles
Weekly Mileage: 18.24 Miles
Remaining to Goal: 713.05 Miles
Wow! Disney is bombarding us with information today on all fronts.
On the RunDisney front, they have added a new 10k race to the 2014 Walt Disney World Princess Half Marathon Weekend on February 20-23, 2014.
There is also a new Glass Slipper Challenge. I have heard from several bloggers, that you will get this if you run the new 10k & the half marathon.
Registration for the Princess Half Marathon Weekend events is June 11th.
Secondly, they have changed the Coast to Coast medal, when you run a race at Walt Disney World and Disneyland in the same year.
This will be a special coast to coast medal for those that complete the Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World and the Tinkerbell Half Marathon at Disneyland. It sounds as if this will be for only completing these races, and that the current Coast to Coast medal will not change.
I will update this post as I get more information.
Special thanks to Heather of Through Heather’s Looking Glass for the update & images.
Post-marathon, spend at least 3 days doing nothing. Jog a few miles the rest of the week. And don’t cross train! You need time to recover.
I just got my Walt Disney World Annual Passholder email, and it has a few cool things coming up this summer, and I thought I would share them in case you missed it.

It so happens that this cool Walt Disney World event was just tweeted by Studio Central. What is even more cool, is that we will be at Walt Disney World next weekend to take part in this!
As part of Walt Disney World’s Limited Time Magic event, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will host a special “Star Wars Day” on May 4th, which is inspired by the pun “May the fourth be with you“.
The May 4th event will feature special Star Wars entertainment, characters, commemorative merchandise, a Star Wars dance party and a Star Wars-themed fireworks show to cap off the day.
In addition, there will be a special Jedi Training Academy session for that day where parents are invited to join their children to face the Dark Side of the force.
At night, there will be a special dance party hosted by Lobot (from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back) that will include a special Star Wars fireworks show.
Runners that are addicted to running want to run everyday; however, is this wise. I religiously only run on Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday. I have ran the Disney Goofy Challenge (half on Saturday & Full on Sunday), and this is plenty of training time, if it is done right. Thus, here are a few recommendations on why you should schedule rest days to have balance in your training plan.
It helps your body repair itself
As a runner you know with running you create micro tears in your muscles. Rest is what allows these muscles recover. Rest gives your body time to recover and repair itself from these tears thus making future runs injury & pain free.
It helps prevent injuryWhen you have a nagging pain, that is your body telling you it is not feeling up to par. This is an indication that your body is asking for a day off to recover. Thinking it is nothing and you cannot run through the pain is not wise. Give your body time to recover otherwise the injury may get bigger causing weeks of unplanned injury layoff.
It helps you mentallyIf you try to run every day, especially without much goal improvement, this is a sign of burn out. When you are burnt out it can be difficult to stick to your training plan. If you are a training plan follower like me, if I miss a run on the plan I get stressed out. Thus the reason for only planning 3 runs a week. This is not a stringent plan to adhere to, thus I am am to continue to enjoy the sport of running, without feeling burnt out.
These three reasons have really helped me maintain my running now for three years, and almost 2000 total miles logged. Pay some thought to these ideas to hopefully help you prolong your running desire and motivation.
Tonight we went over to Mt. Pleasant to TrySports to participate in a 2.62 mile charity run/walk for the victims of the Boston Marathon. My wife and our dogs came out to participate as well. Edisto and I ran and Jennifer and Folly walked the course.
About 100 people from the community showed up to show support for the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. Today, all TrySports stores hosted a 2.62 Run/Walk for Boston. This event was open to everyone and a donation jar was be setup for everyone to make donations to the One Fund Boston.
TrySports also contributed to the One Fund Boston by donating 26.2% of all sales company wide on Monday 4/22/13.
If you could not attend the event but still want to donate, click on the One Fund Boston link, onefundboston.org.
Here are a few pictures from the start of the event.

For the past five years our church, Northwood Baptist has put on a spectacular fireworks display for Fourth of July. This was a great opportunity to touch the community in a new way. However, the state law recently changed, and we are now required to have a certified Pyrotechnics Operator on hand. The guy in our church that has done this every year, did not want to go through this certification and asked if I would do it, which I told him I would. This weekend the process began.
The process starts as a Pyrotechnics Operator Trainee.
As a trainee, you have to setup and perform six (6) certified shows, take an eight our class, and take a certification test. I have until July 3rd to get all this accomplished. The church coordinated with Southeastern Pyrotechnics Inc. to put me through this process. Once I complete the test, I will become a certified Pyrotechnics Operator.
This weekend, I was able to get in two certified shows at Charleston Southern University. The event was celebrating the first night baseball game on their campus.
Over Friday and Saturday I assisted them in setting up all the products to be launched during the show. It was so much fun, and I learned so much. The purpose of the six show requirement is to learn how to set up the equipment, but more importantly, to learn the safety while dealing with the explosives.
Here are a few of the pictures from the set up.
We finished the setup in the top of the ninth of the baseball game. So I had a few minutes to rest before we lit up the sky. So I climbed up on a dirt mound outside the right field wall and watched the last inning of the game.
After the show, one of the coaches came over to tell us their was a “smoking onion” in the left field of the ball field. There we found an embedded, undetonated product. We had to douse it with water and maintain clearance for a while until we could secure it.
Here are a few videos from the show. The first one is the finale from my phone after I had launched all my pyrotechnics. The second is a full length video of the full fireworks show from a fan’s perspective.
A video from Charleston Southern’s weekend of baseball, with a snippet at the end of the firework’s show.
This was such an awesome weekend. I want to thank Jeffrey and Jessica from Southeastern Pyrotechnics for taking me under their wings to learn this skill. I had so much fun and cannot wait to do it again. Two shows down, four to go!
Here is the schedule of the next events I will be helping with:
May 10th – Charleston Riverdogs
Friday May 24th @ Riverdogs
Saturday May 25th @ Charleston Battery
Come out and enjoy the shows!
This week did not start out so well with the tragedy that occurred at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Monday I was too glued to the television to do much in the way of a workout. However, on Tuesday I got to the grid.
Monday (4/15): No Workout
Tuesday (4/16): 4.09 mile run in honor of the victims of the Boston Marathon & a softball game that evening
Wednesday (4/17): 3.2 mile walk at lunch with my coworker, Melvin!
Thursday (4/18): 1.7 mile walk & evening church softball game
Friday (4/19): Rest
Saturday (4/20): I ran 8 miles on the treadmill since the weather was nasty outside. I took in The Little Mermaid movie on the big screen while running.
Yearly Running Goal: 1000 Miles
Weekly Mileage: 17.01 Miles
Remaining to Goal: 731.28 Miles
