I started the year with five new goals for 2013. The first goal was on the horizon immediately for January. I had run a marathon and some half marathons, but never both within 24 hours. In January 2013, I ran in the Goofy Challenge as a part of the Walt Disney Marathon. The Goofy Challenge was to run the Half Marathon on Saturday morning, and the Marathon on Sunday morning. I completed all 39.3 miles!
The second goal was to qualify for Half Fanatics. I qualified for Neptune status by running 3 half marathons in 90 days. I am now HF#3547.
After accomplishing the Goofy Challenge, I had to come up with a new running challenging goal. If you have followed my blog, you know I came up with the 50 By 50 Challenge. This challenge is to run a half marathon in all 50 states before I turn 50. I turned 40 this year, and have completed 4 states, so 46 more to go.
In March I ran two half marathons. The first was the Palmetto Bluff Half Marathon, in which I set my current half marathon PR time of 1:45:17. The second half marathon was the North Carolina Half Marathon in Charlotte, NC in a cold downpour! This North Carolina race was my 3rd state in my 50 By 50 Challenge.
In June we traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia to run the Run for the Dreams Half Marathon. This was my 4th state half marathon in the 50 By 50 Challenge. After this it was training, mostly indoor through the summer until September.
In September, we did a 4 night cruise on the Disney Dream (Day One, Day Two, Days Three & Four) to the Bahamas and Disney’s Castaway Cay. On the day we arrived at Castaway Cay I needed to do a training run, so I decided to run the Castaway Cay 5k. This was my 2nd time to run this event. Event though it was hot, it is always fun to run.
In October, I ran in the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon. This was the 2nd time I had run this race. The first was in 2011, and was my first half marathon. It was neat to return to my first half marathon location, and see how much my running has improved in 2 years. Later in the month, some friends and I had to do an 18 mile training run. Well, there was a local 10k being held close to our training route. So we signed up for the James Island Connector 10k, and got a medal for running part of the event in our training run!
The next day after the James Island Connector 10k, I was breaking up my German Shepherds fighting over one of our cats. While holding them apart, my hands slipped and when they went to bite each other, my hands feel in the bite zone, and I got bit. I had to have hand surgery to repair tendons. This created a two week layoff in my running, and 6 weeks in a cast/brace. I am current still in occupational therapy to get all my joints moving again. Fortunately I had great doctors and therapists and they got me back to running without missing any of my registered races!
In December I ran two half marathons. I started the month with the Space Coast Half Marathon near Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. It was imperative that I got back in running mode for this race, as it was the first of five years in the Big Bang Series. This series will do a different medal commemorating all five space shuttles from 2013-2017. In the middle of the month I ran the local Kiawah Island Half Marathon. This was my 2nd time running this race. I was able to run this race without a brace on my hand. I was 2 minutes slower than my 2012 effort, but I was 3 minutes faster than Space Coast two weeks prior.
The third goal was to run more than five half marathons. I knocked this out the park with completing seven half marathons.
The fourth goal was to run for 1000 miles for the year. I completed this on Monday, December 30th at 1000.5 miles.
The final goal I had for the year was to encourage others to take up running. I am satisfied with the results of this goal as well. I have helped/encouraged more than 10 people to take up running for the first time, or start back to running. Some friends at work and I have even started a Wednesday morning group run before work, which we hope to continue to grow in 2014!
It has been a great year of running for me this year. I hope I remain safe and healthy and can keep it up in 2014. Stay tuned for my 2014 Yearly Goals post to come after the new year begins.
