On Sunday, June 5, 2016, my wife, great nephew, and I drove up to Myrtle Beach to run the ColorBurst 5k and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (TicketReturn.com Field).

I’m not one for 5k events anymore, much less color runs; however, a representative from ColorBurst reached out to me through my blog.  They offered both my wife and I a free entry to the event, as well as a blog participant raffle code to offer.  I did not have any takers on the blog raffle, so we offered it up to our great nephew.  Best move we ever made, as he had a blast!

We drove up on Sunday morning and got there about 10:30 AM.

We went straight to the ball field where the race packet pickup was held.  The packet included a race bib, cotton t-shirt, full paint bottle for the race, and a ticket to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans game later that evening.

After pickup, we had a few hours to kill, so we went out grabbed some lunch, then went around town for a little while.  We then headed back to the ball field. Before changing into our race gear, we went into the ball field and checked out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Team Store.  The Pelicans are the Class A affiliate to the Chicago Cubs, who are my favorite team.  I got some memorabilia, then got ready for the race.

The race started at 2:00 PM.  It was extremely hot that day, so we decided to walk the event so our great nephew could enjoy the event more.  We did 3 1-mile laps of the ball field.  Most all of the participants did as we did and walked the event.  There was probably a dozen or so people that braved the heat and ran the event.  They had four or five stations where volunteers would pour the color to us.  Our great nephew had a blast through those.

The race was really fun.  It was fun watching him enjoy himself with the other participants and the soaking stations.  It turned out to be a real fun event.

Afterward, we went back to the truck to clean up.  Since we drove up for the day, we brought wet wash clothes and towels.  The ball park restrooms were open for us to clean up and change clothes.  Once we were cleaned up we went to Bennett’s Seafood for a seafood buffet before the baseball game that started at 6:15 PM.

The Pelicans really showed up for the game.  It was a great game in that the Pelicans won 15-0 against the Potomac Nationals.  The game ran long because they kept scoring, but we stuck around to the end with the hopes of getting some player interaction and autographs.  We were successful and got about 8 players to cooperate.

I was excited to get to see Shawon Dunston Jr and Ian Happ.  Dunston (who was traded two days later to the San Francisco Giants) is the son of former Cubs shortstop Shawon Dunston, and Happ was the Cubs first round draft pick in the 2015 MLB Draft.

It was a long day, but we had a blast.  I would like to thank Steve Berger from ColorBurst for reaching out to me through my blog to help promote the event and the free race entries.
