Well what a bad way to start a new year. I was to have run the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon in Jackson, MS for my 18th state on Saturday. So, my wife and I traveled 10 hours to Mississippi on Thursday. There we met up with our friends Matt & Kira who were going to run the race with me. Well then… Winter Storm Helena showed up as well. After traveling all that way, on Friday night at 9:30 PM they cancelled the race. We were devastated. We had traveled all that way and planned out all our cold weather running gear to run in 18 degree temperatures and they canceled the race. Oh well what can you do. We are now frozen in a hotel 700 miles from home with nothing to do. We did the best we could. Luckily all of us love board games so that is just what we did all weekend long. On Saturday they made a post that if we wanted our medals (even though we didn’t do the race) we could come up to the Art Museum and pick them up. Well that gave us just the opportunity to get out and see the town. BAD IDEA. The roads were frozen. We were all over the road getting there, but we made it safely. This was also where the race was to have started. When we got out the Jeep, the roads (where we would have started) were like glass. That is when we made the realization that the Race Directors made the right decision to cancel the race. Well on Sunday we made our journey back home. The interstates were horrible and it took us 11.5 hours to make it back home. We made it safely back.
Upon returning, one of my running partner’s Renee, forwarded me a post from the Charleston Marathon. The Charleston Marathon is this upcoming weekend. They decided to give any runners, who’s race was canceled this weekend, a nice discount to come and run the race. I contacted them and it was in fact a nice discount. I have signed up for the Charleston Half Marathon so I can get in my mileage for this past weekend. It will be nice running a race at 58 degrees instead of the 18 degrees the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon would have been.
Here was this past week’s training.
Monday (1/2): No workout. Spent the day unloading the fireworks truck from our shoot at James Island County Park for New Years Eve.
Tuesday (1/3): I ran 3 miles on the treadmill at the gym at lunch. I ran a hill training module at 6.0mph (10 minute pace).
Wednesday (1/4): I met up with my Wednesday morning MUSC Running Group at the Wellness Center at 5:30a and ran 4 miles. We averaged a 9:29 pace.
Thursday (1/5): No workout. Drove to Jackson, MS
Friday (1/6): No workout. Jackson, MS
Saturday (1/7): No workout. What was supposed to have been the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon.

I really hate that the race was cancelled for you because you put a lot of time and money into travelling to Mississippi to run it. I’m glad you got to spend time with your friends even if it wasn’t in great conditions, but that’s a long time to get home on icy roads. I am glad they still gave you guys the medals… I know a lot of runners have an issue with that, but I think it’s good that you’re going to run 13.1 this weekend and “earn” it that way. Looks like the weather will be nice for Charleston!
Yep got to get that mileage in after feeling like a slouch this weekend!
Hey, you made the best of a bad situation. It was totally out of the runners’ hands, and sometimes that is how life is. At least you will have a really good taper for Charleston ;).
