My next half marathon toward my 50 By 50 Challenge of doing a half marathon in all 50 states before I turn 50 will be the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, May 2, 2015.
This week they revealed the finisher medal, and I have to say I am excited about adding this one to the collection.
In two months I will run the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon in Indianapolis, IN for my 9th state toward my 50 By 50 Challenge.
Below is a video of the course route.

The countdown clock above is on display at OneAmerica in Indianapolis, IN. My friend Dave Daniel works there and supplied the photo.
Back in 2013 I decided to attempt to run a half marathon in all 50 states before I turned 50. I called it my 50 By 50 Challenge. To add to the motivation, I joined the Fifty States Half Marathon Club to work with others attempting the same feat. This is an awesome group that support each other. We share race recaps to help others in deciding which races to run. We do meet ups at about every half marathon on the chart. It is just a great motivator to complete my goal.
Being a part of the club, you can get special gear to wear around to let others know of your goal. At Christmas, my wife got me the short sleeved black club tech shirt. On the back is an outline of the fifty states. You can take clothing markers and color in the states as you complete them. As of this post, I have completed 8 states. This past weekend was a dreary one, so we stayed inside. We took the opportunity to color in my completed states. With it being a black shirt, we have had to make several passes at it to get the states dark enough. We may still go another round before it is done.
Have a look. I think it turned out awesome. I cannot wait to color in more states soon. There will be four more getting colored in before year’s end.

Half Marathon #15
On Saturday, November 08, 2014, I ran with my running partner, Rachel, in the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Savannah, GA. This was my 8th state toward my 50 By 50 Challenge to run a half marathon in all 50 states before I turn 50. It was also my 15th half marathon. Savannah is a beautiful city, and everything is relatively close. Because I had planned to do this race in 2013, I already had a plan, so I booked a hotel early, as they fill up even before the race registration goes out. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard, which is an awesome location, because you are halfway between the start and finish lines.
This was the view from our room.
We woke up about 5 AM, had a little breakfast & fluids, got ready, and off to the start line we went.
I planned a meetup for our Fifty States Half Marathon Club at the start line (Customs House) at 6:15 AM. I had never met anyone from the club, so I was apprehensive if anyone would show. I made a sign, and that helped us all meet up. I think there were 11 of us to show. A great turnout! We only chatted for a few minutes, then we all had to get to our various corrals.
On Saturday, November 8, 2014, I completed the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, in Savannah, Georgia.
This was my 8th state completed in my 50 By 50 Challenge. I have updated the page with this race’s information.
I have also added a new medal page for the state of Georgia which includes this race’s medal image.
I will have the race recap later this week. Stay tuned.

Half Marathon #14
On Sunday, August 31st I ran the Disneyland Half Marathon in California. This was my 7th state completed in my 50 By 50 Challenge. With the completion of this race I am also a RunDisney Coast to Coast medal holder, which means I have completed at least a half marathon at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California in a calendar year.
Well, coming from the east coast this race was much easier to get up for. I woke up at 4am (not the typical 3am in Walt Disney World), which feels like 7am back home, so I popped up ready to go. Here at Disneyland races, the race starts right at the on property hotels, so we could walk to the Start line about 45 minutes to start time. It was awesome, no waiting on buses like in Walt Disney World.
At the race start, it was not the pomp & fireworks like at Walt Disney World. As a certified pyrotechnician, I love the fireworks for Walt Disney World starts. Not Here… The reasoning is that the non-Disney community is right next door, so they could not be shooting fireworks off for every corral start at 5:30 in the morning. That was a bummer for me. They did fire a few small red comets during the national anthem though.
It is a pretty amazing starting line.
The corrals were policed well as with all RunDisney races. I was in Corral B, so I figured we would not go until at least 5:35am. Surprise…. Corral A & B, you are going together, so get ready, and off we went. It was a little warmer and humid than I expected, so my race plan was adjusted almost immediately. It was 70 degrees and 94% humidity at the start, and I had planned to shoot for a 1:55 finish. Not happening, but I was close at a 1:58:46.

Yesterday, RunDisney revealed the medals for the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend which kicked off on August 29, 2014. We will be flying out to California, as I will run the Half Marathon on that Sunday, August 31st.
The Half Marathon medal for Disneyland doesn’t normally change much, with the focus on the Big D; however, this year, they have added a circle around it. For the other races, it appears Lilo and Stitch are going to be the headliners.
Because I ran the Goofy Challenge and a Half at Walt Disney World in Florida in January, this race will allow me to acquire a second medal out in California, called the Coast to Coast Medal. This medal is awarded to anyone who completes at least a half marathon at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in a calendar year.
This race will go toward my 50 By 50 Challenge and count as State #7, by completing a half marathon in California.
Here are a couple other medal reviews from fellow RunDisney bloggers: Why I RunDisney & Through Heather’s Looking Glass
I will be doing the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Half Marathon on November 8, 2014. They have released the course map and video tour of the course. The video has both the half marathon and full marathon included.

Half Marathon #13
One word…. Hills…. Hills…. Hills….. Sorry I stuttered there a little, but for this Charleston SC guy those hills were brutal. I will discuss this further below in the recap.
On April 26, 2014, I ran the Country Music Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee. Let me start by saying that in my 30 races, 13 half marathons, this was the most organized event in which I have ever participated in. Yes, I think they even out-shined the RunDisney events! From communications to expo, traffic to corrals, start to finish on the race, it was the best race I have ever been a part of! This was the 15th anniversary of this race. This was my first Rock ‘n Roll series event, and I plan to do far more in the future based on their showing here in Nashville. In fact, I will be doing the Savannah Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in November. Sign up and join me, you will not be disappointed.
