Half Marathon #44
On Sunday, May 6, 2018 I ran in the Middlebury (VT) Maple Run Half Marathon. My wife and I did a quick flight up to Vermont on Saturday morning and returned Sunday evening after the race. We had to fly into Burlington, VT, which was about an hour drive to Middlebury where the race was. However, before heading to Middlebury, we decided to spend a few hours in Burlington. It was a nice scenic little town.
On Saturday, February 7, 2015 I ran the Save The Light Half Marathon on Folly Beach, SC. This is a small local race for me, that has both a 5k and half marathon. Each race contained about 350 runners.
Folly Beach is a beautiful place for a race. It was an awesome view seeing the sun rise before the race over the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was in the low 40s at the start of the race with little to no wind. The race ended in the low 50s.
Proceeds from the race go toward the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse by Save The Light.
The morning started by arriving on the island about 7:15 A.M. for packet pickup. They have packet pickup on Friday as well, but it is about a 45 minute drive for me, so I just decided to get there early for pickup. Pickup was at The Tides Hotel. Pickup was on the second floor in one of the conference rooms. The second floor had a large open area for everyone hang out, meet up, stretch, and catch up before going out for the race start.
Back in 2013 I decided to attempt to run a half marathon in all 50 states before I turned 50. I called it my 50 By 50 Challenge. To add to the motivation, I joined the Fifty States Half Marathon Club to work with others attempting the same feat. This is an awesome group that support each other. We share race recaps to help others in deciding which races to run. We do meet ups at about every half marathon on the chart. It is just a great motivator to complete my goal.
Being a part of the club, you can get special gear to wear around to let others know of your goal. At Christmas, my wife got me the short sleeved black club tech shirt. On the back is an outline of the fifty states. You can take clothing markers and color in the states as you complete them. As of this post, I have completed 8 states. This past weekend was a dreary one, so we stayed inside. We took the opportunity to color in my completed states. With it being a black shirt, we have had to make several passes at it to get the states dark enough. We may still go another round before it is done.
Have a look. I think it turned out awesome. I cannot wait to color in more states soon. There will be four more getting colored in before year’s end.

Half Marathon #15
On Saturday, November 08, 2014, I ran with my running partner, Rachel, in the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Savannah, GA. This was my 8th state toward my 50 By 50 Challenge to run a half marathon in all 50 states before I turn 50. It was also my 15th half marathon. Savannah is a beautiful city, and everything is relatively close. Because I had planned to do this race in 2013, I already had a plan, so I booked a hotel early, as they fill up even before the race registration goes out. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard, which is an awesome location, because you are halfway between the start and finish lines.
This was the view from our room.
We woke up about 5 AM, had a little breakfast & fluids, got ready, and off to the start line we went.
I planned a meetup for our Fifty States Half Marathon Club at the start line (Customs House) at 6:15 AM. I had never met anyone from the club, so I was apprehensive if anyone would show. I made a sign, and that helped us all meet up. I think there were 11 of us to show. A great turnout! We only chatted for a few minutes, then we all had to get to our various corrals.
On Saturday, November 8, 2014, I completed the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, in Savannah, Georgia.
This was my 8th state completed in my 50 By 50 Challenge. I have updated the page with this race’s information.
I have also added a new medal page for the state of Georgia which includes this race’s medal image.
I will have the race recap later this week. Stay tuned.
