On Saturday when I was running with my friend Maribel, she said she signed up to do a Virtual Race. I had been hearing this term recently and asked her more about it. A virtual race is a race you sign up for and run in your own town within a set time frame with others across the country. When you finish you go on a website and post your finish times. This sounded really neat, so I asked her more about the race she was going to do.
The race is iRun Against Diabetes. This is a virtual 5K/10K/Half marathon race that you can choose to run on your own, with a group, as a team or as part of an organized race. All you need to do is walk, run or crawl your way to the completion of 3.1, 6.2 or 13.1 miles. After you have completed your distance, simply go this website and log in your time via the CONTACT page and you are done! It is THAT simple. Each race distance has a 4 day window of opportunity to run your distance.
Time submissions will be posted on active.com. If you do not wish to have your time posted on active’s website, just have fun, run your challenge distance and wait for your medal in the mail. You are supporting a great cause. Remember, if you are already running a road race you do not have to run twice, just submit your time from your road race.
The race is over the weekend from Friday, June 21, 2013 – 01:00 AM until Monday, June 24, 2013 – 11:00 PM. You have any time within this window to complete your race.
The race is only $10 no matter which event you do. You can register here.
This sounds really neat, and I think I am going to sign up for the half marathon, and my wife is going to sign up for the 5k. I encourage you to think about it and sign up. Anyone can walk a 5k and it is for a good cause.
Now all my running partners know, I am all about the bling (medal!) when I sign up for races. Well, we are in luck! All registrants for 5K, 10K and half marathon challenge receive a finisher’s medal in the mail. If you do not want to run/walk – please consider donating to the cause with a sleep-in donation. Please see our DONATIONS page for details.

There are more details on the website. Check it out and consider it. Please comment on this blog post if you sign up. If we have enough people in the area sign up, we may try and put together a group outing for the various events.
